The Ph.D. in Public Affairs program encourages applicants with diverse academic backgrounds, and admission is not restricted to those with prior course work in a specific degree. You must have a master’s degree prior to starting degree work and are expected to have a GPA of 3.5 or better for all prior graduate course work; however, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, and applicants failing to meet the minimum requirements may be admitted based on other evidence of potential.
You are also expected to have the fundamentals of statistics and research methods in your background or may be required to take remedial training prior to core course work.

As a student in our program, you will be expected to take two courses each semester, including the summer. In your first year, you will take the same courses as other first-year students, including a one-credit course the first semester that will introduce you to the program.
The program, approved by the Board of Regents in 2004, is 46 credits beyond the master’s degree, and credits are divided into four categories:
Successful completion of course work and passing scores on the comprehensive examination are required before students can advance to candidacy for the Ph.D. and present a dissertation proposal.
