The program mission of the master of arts program in Urban Leadership is to engage students in interdisciplinary approaches to creating knowledge and understanding that supports effective leadership, policy, and governance across all community organizations. The program aims to develop cross-boundary leaders that are responsive, effective, and collaborative.
The Program of Study
- Reaches out to students from diverse community organizations
- Includes options for school administrator certification
- Is based in contemporary education, social and community problems and opportunities
- Contributes to continual community and organizational development
- Has faculty and students who are fully engaged learners
- Has faculty and students who are active participants at the local, state, regional and national levels
- Has a faculty that models a learning organization by continually evaluating and evolving the program to meet student and community needs
Learning Theory
The instructional methods used in the Masters program for Urban Leadership follow research-based approaches for adult learners.
- Learning activities are problem-centered rather than subject-centered.
- Learning is interactive, experiential, and collaborative.
- Research and theory are tightly connected to practical problems/issues.
- Learning takes place in cross-agency practice fields—beyond the classroom.
- Learning activities are linked to student’s professional worlds and respectful of the complexities of their roles.
