Robert J. Tekniepe

It seems fitting that Robert J. Tekniepe earned the distinctive title of “first graduate” of UNLV’s Public Affairs Ph.D. program in 2007. His goal was not to become the first graduate of his program; it simply worked out that way. In his work as assistant planning manager for the Clark County Department of Air Quality and Environmental Management (DAQEM), Tekniepe is involved in issues related to air quality in the Las Vegas Valley including the preparation of State Implementation Plans for criteria air pollutants, (i.e., carbon monoxide and ozone).

Benefts of the Degree
Tekniepe is also involved in representing DAQEM in Nevada state legislative sessions, procurement of grants, developing and implementing motor vehicle fuel specifications for Clark County, and county sustainable practices. He believes his degree has enhanced his ability to critically think and understand policy decision making and implications of future and existing policy decisions.

Staying Connected
Since his graduation, Tekniepe maintains his connections to UNLV by teaching graduate level SEPA courses in quantitative research methods, research design, and principles of public administration. In teaching, Robert believes that his ability to bring practical applications of theories and methods that are being taught is an important component. His dissertation was titled “Turnover of Appointed County Administrators in Large American Counties”.

Professional and Practical Experience
Tekniepe’s professional and practical experience is comprised of environmental science and public affairs. Prior to working for Clark County, he worked for more than a decade for the State of Nevada as the southern regional manager for audit and investigations in the Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation; he also has 20 years of experience in hazardous materials and ordnance in the defense and aerospace industry.

“Working for my Ph.D. helped to broaden my knowledge on issues relating to regional governance, leadership turnover, public employee compensation, and effective policy implementation.”
