The mission of the School of Environmental and Public Affairs (SEPA) at UNLV is to employ an interdisciplinary approach to create knowledge and understanding to support effective policy and governance through collaborations of faculty, students, and the greater community. Our vision is a community that continuously engages important decision-making processes in order to facilitate effective, long-term, problem-solving capacity for society in the areas of environmental science and management, public administration, and other policy arenas. Achieving this will require new levels of cooperation among citizens and experts across the public, non-profit, civic, and private sectors.
Given this, the School is well positioned to make a difference in the science, policy and management challenges associated with many different public issues. Our unique interdisciplinary approach draws from critical skill sets that allow us to match the complexity of existing and emergent public problems such as, but not limited to:
- environmental sustainability,
- nonprofit management,
- education and leadership challenges,
- health care policy management,
- the economics of housing and public finance,
- collaborative and network governance,
- emergency and crisis management,
- new ways of making government more effective,
- understanding and mitigating climate change, and
- managing water resources in arid regions.
The SEPA faculty’s disciplinary backgrounds include:
- risk assessment and management,
- natural resource, environmental and energy policy,
- public administration and management,
- economics,
- GIS and remote sensing,
- environmental systems modeling, and
- the politics of decision making in the 21st Century.
